In Business Studies we encourage the personal development of knowledge and skills relevant to the business world through practical participation in a range of business activities.

Students develop and apply skills in English and mathematics in work-related contexts to give them a wider understanding and appreciation of the broad range of business areas.

Key Stage 4

Students can opt to follow the BTEC Business Tech Award in Enterprise and this is delivered over 5 hours each week. The BTEC Award is a mix of coursework and external examination focusing on the key aspects of business. It prepares students for a life in the world of business and enterprise and develops skills for further education and employment. The course has a highly practical element where students design and run their own businesses to raise money for a charity or cause of their choice.

The Business Tech Award is designed to help students to set up their own business, in the future by giving you the skills you will need. The students will learn all about different businesses in the local area, what makes them successful, and all of the things that affect them. The students will set up their own business with a group of their friends to raise money for a charity of their choice.

The course is a mixture of coursework and exam for this course, there are 2 coursework units and 1 examined unit. Students will get 2 attempts at the exam and the highest grade will count.

Component 1 – This component is an introduction to the world of enterprise, learning about the basics of business, allows for students to investigate our local economy and the way the wider economy affects businesses locally and nationally.

Component 2 – As a small group the students will work together to come up with a business idea, come up with a business plan and then run the business. The students will need to evaluate the success of your project at the end and suggest how you could have improved.

Component 3 – The assessment is paper-based, students will have a short case study to read focusing on a small business

Students will need to look at the way the business markets its business and what it could improve. Students will also look at the finance side of the business and measure how successful the business has been.
