Recognising and Celebrating Young Carers

On Wednesday 12th March and across the week, Co-op Academy Stoke-on-Trent marked Young Carers Action Day, recognising the incredible contributions of the young carers within our Academy community.

A young carer is anyone under the age of 18 who looks after a relative or friend who is unable to fully care for themselves due to illness, disability, addiction, or mental health difficulties. Many young carers juggle these responsibilities while managing their own education and personal lives, often without others even realising the challenges they face.

There are more than 40 young carers amongst the students at our Academy. You can learn more about what we do to support them, and all students, by visiting the Student Support section of our website:

The theme of this year's event was "Give Me A Break", and we did just that. To honour our young carers' hard work and dedication, Mrs Timony hosted a special celebration event, giving our young carers the chance to come together, share experiences, and enjoy a well-deserved break from their daily responsibilities. The event aimed to show appreciation for their resilience and provide a supportive space where they could connect with others in similar situations.

Young Carers Action Day is an important reminder of the incredible young people within our academy who balance their education with caring for loved ones. We are so proud of them and remain committed to supporting them in any way we can.
